Meningococcus B: current specific situation in ARA

In recent months, out of 26 cases of meningococcal B detected in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 10 cases were linked to a new variant.
The people concerned were all between the ages of 16 and 21 and most attended the Chambery sector (residence, employment, outings, etc.).

In view of this situation, the ARS has defined, in conjunction with a group of experts, the preventive actions to be carried out, knowing that the vaccine is the only effective way to prevent meningococcus B and its consequences.

The geographical area concerned

The sector identified corresponds to the Chambéry catchment area (INSEE data), which corresponds to:

  • 112 municipalities in Savoy,
  • 1 municipality of Ain,
  • 2 towns in Isère.

Find the list of municipalities concerned in the paragraph below.

Meningococcal B vaccination recommendations for 0-2 year olds and 16-24 year olds

In that sectortwo populations at increased risk of IIM B have thus been identified:

  • young people aged 16-24
  • children 0-2 years old ; the new variant can also be transmitted to this age group

It is therefore recommended:

  • to 16-24 ans living in these municipalities to be vaccinated
  • to the parents of infants 0-2 years old ensure that their child has been vaccinated, in accordance with the new HAS recommendations in the 2022 vaccination calendar and, if this is not the case, to get closer to their doctor doctor/paediatrician.

Vaccination includes a first injection and a booster with a period of at least one month between the two injections.

The people concerned by this vaccination are informed by letter from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency.

They can approach their doctor or the vaccination centers indicated in the paragraph below.

Doctors in this sector have been informed of this specific situation and of the vaccination recommendation.

Reimbursement of the meningococcal B vaccine

As part of this campaign, the meningococcal B vaccine is subject to 100% reimbursement (65% health insurance + 35% mutual) when purchased in pharmacies and is issued free of charge in the vaccination centers mobilized.
