Offering women monthly leave to enable them to cope with painful periods: this is the idea that has gradually gained ground in Europe and France in recent months. Granted in February 2023 for women in Spain, this right is also tested in France on an ad hoc basis, by decision of certain employers and according to different methods.

Thus, a handful of companies, such as Carrefour, and municipalities, such as the town hall of Saint-Ouen (Seine-Saint-Denis), have announced that they will grant up to twelve additional days off, i.e. up to one per month, to women with painful periods or endometriosis, a disease of the uterus that causes extreme pain during menstruation.

At the National Assembly, the ecologist deputy Sébastien Peytavie joined forces with Marie-Charlotte Garin and Sandrine Rousseau, deputies from his group, to carry out a consultation on the subject with feminist associations, representatives of the medical world and that of of the company. Their objective is to draft a bill to create menstrual leave for all, which is compensated, without a waiting day, while respecting medical secrecy. The proposal is not unanimous, especially among certain feminist associations.
