Mental health, “a universal human right”

The theme of World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2023 will be: “Mental health is a universal human right”, according to a statement from the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). This theme was chosen following a global vote involving WFMH members, stakeholders and supporters. The statement recalls combines the people concerned suffer from discrimination, are generally in poorer health, with a reduced life expectancy. “The aspiration to good mental health must clearly be considered a basic human right. Guaranteeing access to mental health services must be an obligation and a responsibility of States and global organizations that can no longer be ignored,” argues the association, which campaigns for governments to take responsibility.
