“It’s about us stopping discriminating against people with mental illnesses compared to those with physical problems,” says psychiatrist Kurosch Yazdi-Zorn. The CEO of pro mente Upper Austria is calling for more education on the occasion of “Mental Health Day”: “The brain is our most complex organ. Accordingly, society needs to understand that it cannot always function perfectly. The central question must be: How Am I able to advance the healing process of my psyche as quickly as possible in the event of an illness?”

For ten days in October, pro mente Upper Austria provides information about illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorders and panic attacks. At the symposium “Mentally healthy – for a lifetime” at the Ursulinenhof Linz from 3 p.m., experts will focus on the topic of prevention. Margot Peters, expert in medical-psychiatric rehabilitation, illustrates ten steps that lead to mental health.

Good life despite dementia

Holger Schaller and affected young people provide insights into life in start.box, a center for mental health for young people. A reading by bestselling author Arno Geiger from the autobiographical novel “The Old King in His Exile” is about dealing with relatives suffering from dementia.

Visitors receive bundled information about the diverse support offers in the areas of prevention, advice, therapy and support across the entire lifespan – from youth to old age. It’s about not only promoting the well-being of individuals, but also social cohesion in our society.

It can happen to anyone

According to Primary Yazdi-Zorn, it could affect anyone: “No one has the right to never be physically ill throughout their life – that is, neither to get the flu nor to suffer from a headache. As common as it is, the body occasionally “If we are ill for a certain period of time and recover again, it should be so normal that our psyche is affected at times.”

40 percent of Upper Austrians say that their psychosocial situation has worsened as a result of the corona pandemic.

Across Europe, one in three people will suffer from a mental illness at some point in their life.

A UN study shows that mental illnesses continue to have a shadowy existence compared to physical illnesses – regardless of their frequency. This situation also contributes to the fact that mentally ill people continue to be massively disadvantaged – in social, social or medical terms.

For most people affected, the stigma of mental illness is worse than the illness itself. Studies show this.

In the Research & Projects team at pro mente Upper Austria, theory and practice are combined in social psychiatric and psychosocial work. Among other things, social, cultural and other environmental factors in the development and progression of mental illnesses as well as the living conditions of those affected are examined.
