MEPHORASH is a black metal band from Sweden that has been active since 2010. I met this group through a live performance at the Inferno Festival in Oslo and was immediately fascinated by their playing style. That’s why I’m particularly pleased that I can introduce you to the Nordmen’s new album “Krystl-Ah”.

Drum noises and humming vocals mark the beginning of the opener and title track “Krystl-Ah”. The slow rhythm remains throughout, but the whole thing becomes more powerful and supplemented with a mix of clean and harsh vocals as well as occasional chorales. There are always melodic parts as a counterpoint to the hard ones, creating an intense atmosphere. The moderate tones continue to determine the action and you can sink wonderfully into these worlds of sound. Nevertheless, there are enough powerful parts to take you out of your indulgence, but the transitions are never a nuisance for the ears, but are always flowing.

“Catoptrophilia” sounds like a Nordic Viking hymn and in the following “Soma Yoni” you can hear a woman moaning with pleasure – the Viking was probably successful! “Chrysallís” has a very anthemic style and “I Am” also begins in a similar way, but develops into a very powerful track in which, like its predecessors, there is also room for melodic elements. The final track “Mephoriam” is more than a quarter of an hour long and here pure mysticism is practiced again, with sonorous melodies, clean vocals and all sorts of sound effects such as the ringing of bells. But there is also space for heaviness and so this track is perfect for getting to know the Swedes.

If you like atmospheric black metal and also have a certain penchant for mysticism, MEPHORASH is the right place for you. You can really sink into these sound worlds, and since “Krystl-Ah” has more than an hour of playing time, you can do this at length. I was very lucky to see them live in London recently, where they played a lot of new things, and it would be nice if the Swedes went on tour after the release – including a stop in Austria.
