The Mercedes Formula One world champion team sparked talk and comments during pre-season testing in Bahrain yesterday, after appearing with a completely modified car that caught the eye and annoyed rival Red Bull.
The W13 has significantly narrow sides, with World Championship Motorsports director Ross Bruce saying: “The car is impressive, a very stark interpretation of the regulations that was unexpected.”
“There will certainly be a lot of discussion about Mercedes’ interpretation of the rules,” he told Formula 1 TV. That’s what happens with the new rules, despite serious attempts to close all options, and believe me we’ve closed hundreds of them already, the innovation in Formula 1 is always stark.”
German magazine Auto Motor und Sport quoted Red Bull boss Christian Horner as saying Mercedes had broken the “spirit” of the rules.
