Mercedes Team Boss Toto Wolff’s Absence at Japanese Grand Prix due to Knee Surgery: Bitter Setback for the Racing Team

Bitter failure for Mercedes!

The German racing team has to do without Toto Wolff (51) at the Japanese Grand Prix (Sunday 7 a.m.; Sky). Reason: The team boss and co-owner (like Daimler and Ineos holds 33.33 percent of the Formula 1 team) has to undergo knee surgery.

In the Hochrum Clinic near Innsbruck in his native Austria, Wolff has his cruciate ligament repaired, while Lewis Hamilton (38) & Co. race around the track in Suzuka. The accident happened while mountain biking during the summer break.

Wolff told “Krone”: “I drove over slippery rocks. It wasn’t that I couldn’t handle it. But I wanted to support myself with my left leg – and it just snapped because I no longer have a cruciate ligament.”

Wolff: “In Qatar I want to walk without crutches”

The team boss’s left arm is also not yet fully usable again due to a tear in the elbow capsule. Wolff revealed to the Austrian newspaper that he has not yet been able to fully stretch his arm. At least he isn’t in any pain. If possible, this should not be the case with the cruciate ligament either.

“I’ll skip Japan, then it’s a free weekend, I’d like to walk around Qatar without crutches,” explains Wolff. And further: “Then you can even go skiing in the winter.” An ambitious plan.

It is not unusual for Wolff to skip the Japan race. The Austrian was already missing from the Grand Prix in Suzuka last season. While there were numerous sponsorship appointments for the drivers and team bosses at the Singapore race a week ago, Suzuka is one of the quietest weekends for those in charge.

Wolff is represented by Jerome D’Ambrosio (37), head of Mercedes’ youth program, and Bradley Lord, head of communications for the Silver Arrows. The choice is no surprise. There have been rumors in the paddock for some time that D’Ambrosio is Wolff’s chosen successor should he decide to step down as team boss.
