The municipal council of the municipality of Wachtebeke, in East Flanders, gave the green light to a merger with the neighboring town of Lochristi this Thursday evening. Everything suggests that the merger project will also be approved on Monday in Lochristi. The new merged municipality will be called… Lochristi and will have nearly 31,000 inhabitants in 2025.

Once both municipal councils have approved the merger decision, the merger file will be submitted to the Flemish government.
With the merger of the two municipalities, the area of Lochristi will increase to 94.87 square kilometers. Wachtebeke will continue to have its own municipal administrative center. In addition to 9080, the postal number 9185 will also be retained.
