Merve Dizdar, first Turkish actress award
The 36-year-old actress won the Best Actress award at Cannes this Saturday evening.
At 36, Merve Dizdar is the first Turkish actress to win the Best Actress award at Cannes for her role as Nuray in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “Dried Herbs”. Palme d’or on the Croisette in 2014, the Turkish director entrusted him with the role of an activist injured in an attack and wearing a prosthesis, who is trying to rebuild herself.
Deniz Celiloglu embodies Samet, a teacher from the city, oscillating between despair and misanthropy and immersed in this rural region of Anatolia, undermined by renunciation. Through the story of Samet, who thinks he is at the end of his obligatory service in this region and who has long hoped for a soon transfer to Istanbul, the author tackles the psychological repercussions of the estrangement felt, the feeling of isolation, alienation and exclusion. The film also depicts the difficult daily struggle that the inhabitants of this region must carry out, as well as the dynamics of the geographical, ethnic or social fabric that surrounds them.
Merve Dizdar, who studied drama and started out in the theater, shot in her first film, “Bir Ses Böler Geceyi” (“A Noise in the Night”), in 2011 before continuing in television series. In 2020, she is very noticed in the comedy “War of the Eltis”, one of the biggest theatrical successes in Turkey. Before her, two Turkish actors received the Best Actor Award in 2003, Muzaffer Özdemir and Mehmet Emin Toprak, for their role in “Uzak” by the same Nuri Bilge Ceylan.
The character she plays in “Dried herbs” “is fighting for her existence and has overcome many difficulties”, reacted Merve Dizdar after the announcement of her award.
Turning with Ceylan, “for me, it was a sublime experience. My character was not very detailed in the scenario, it had to be interpreted”, she explained to the press after the screening of the film during the competition. Working with Nuri Bilge Ceylan “is something very rewarding”, added the actress, who only discovered the finished feature film the day before its presentation. “We were like in a laboratory at the start of filming, on the feelings, the characters. This director is exceptional. Turning, it was like a dance where the feelings mix”.
