When Met Éireann failed to issue a severe weather warning for County Kerry ahead of the flash floods that struck Killarney, local officials and business owners were left demanding answers. A sudden deluge swept through the town on Thursday evening, depositing 57mm of rain in under four hours and overwhelming local drainage channels.

The storm cell caught the county entirely off guard. Data from the Muckross House weather station outside Killarney recorded the heaviest concentration of rainfall between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm, when about 30mm fell within a single hour. Dried leaves and twigs, accumulated during a recent dry period, clogged local drainage channels. Hard ground conditions prevented surface absorption, turning roadways into fast-flowing torrents, according to local reporting from Pollar News.
Kerry County Council staff, the Kerry Fire Service, Kerry Civil Defence, and Gardaí mobilized across the town at approximately 7:00 pm to respond to distress calls and rescue stranded motorists.

As Shahzad Rashid described the chaotic scene, “Some customers were standing at the door waiting for the rain to stop when all of a sudden a river of about one-foot-high water shot into the restaurant.” Neighboring business owners, including Pat O’Connor of Variety Sounds and Lisa Wiltsey of Lily Designs, worked through the night alongside cleaning crews to extract water and salvage stock.

When contacted by Radio Kerry, Met Éireann issued a statement explaining that rain affected many parts of the country and that yellow-level rainfall warnings were issued for counties in the south and southeast on Wednesday. The national forecaster stated that as additional model guidance arrived, it indicated the risk of heavy rain was likely to shift northwards, leading to warnings for Dublin and Kildare on Thursday evening. Met Éireann added that the rain featured pockets of highly localised intense downpours resulting in surface flooding.
