Meta Launches Free Facebook Verified Badge via Video Selfie Authentication

Meta is rolling out a free Facebook Verified badge across select markets, requiring users to record a short selfie video to prove their accounts are operated by actual humans rather than bots or AI-generated profiles. The system matches the live capture against existing profile photos without requiring government-issued IDs, though it does not verify legal names or guarantee platform trustworthiness.

The tech stack powering this rollout relies on facial recognition technology that Meta previously promised to dismantle. In November 2021, the company announced it would delete over one billion individual facial data samples amid mounting privacy concerns. Yet, this verification system reuses those underlying biometric pipelines to process short video captures.

Under the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), biometric data is heavily guarded under Article 9, prohibiting processing without explicit consent and carrying penalties of up to 4% of global annual turnover for non-compliance.

Architecture of the Free Selfie Verification Flow

Users record a brief selfie video directly inside the application. Meta’s internal verification pipeline compares the live video frames against the user’s previously uploaded profile pictures to establish continuity.

Accounts with sparse photo histories or newly uploaded images lack the longitudinal visual data necessary for robust comparison. Consequently, older, well-established profiles possess a significantly stronger verification baseline than newly minted accounts.

Furthermore, the badge does not authenticate legal identity. It only confirms that a physical human completed a specific facial capture process linked to that account. Once verified, the badge appears initially on Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and personal profiles, before expanding outward to feed posts.

Tackling the Platform Fraud Epidemic

Meta’s deployment targets its highest-risk attack surfaces. Marketplace, Dating, and Groups represent the densest concentration of fraudulent activity across the entire ecosystem. Internal Meta documents leaked to Reuters in November 2025 revealed that the platform was exposing users to roughly 150억 건의 high-risk scam ads daily, with fake Marketplace listings and fraudulent dating profiles peaking at 220억 건의 daily instances near the end of 2024.

External pressure has compounded rapidly. The Swedish Advertising Association (IAB) stripped Meta of its membership in March 2026 over unaddressed fraudulent advertising. In April 2026, the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) launched a class-action lawsuit in the United States, arguing that Meta’s automated ad auction architecture systematically incentivizes lax enforcement.

Against this backdrop, Meta reported removing over 1억 5,900만 건 이상의 fraudulent ads throughout 2025, claiming that 92% of those removals occurred proactively before user reporting.

Differentiating Free Authentication from Paid Subscriptions

This free tier operates entirely independently of the existing Meta Verified subscription model launched in 2023. That paid service requires government-issued identification and charges monthly subscription fees—ranging up to $14.99 on iOS and Android due to app store commission fees from Apple and Google.

While the paid tier targets businesses and public figures to provide anti-impersonation security and direct customer support, the new free badge offers no commercial guarantees. It merely asserts that an individual completed a biometric liveness check.

Global regulatory frameworks are tightening around these exact methods. In Vietnam, Decree 147/2024/ND-CP mandates that cross-platform social networks with over 10만 명의 monthly visitors must authenticate user accounts via phone numbers or personal identification numbers. Additionally, Vietnam’s Personal Data Protection Law classifies biometrics—including facial recognition, fingerprints, iris scans, and voice—as sensitive data requiring strict impact assessments before any cross-border data transfer.

Meanwhile, government initiatives continue to explore standardized digital identity integration. Vietnam’s Central National Digital Transformation Steering Committee has set a third-quarter 2026 deadline to research technical solutions integrating social networks with the VNeID electronic identification system using OpenID Connect and OAuth 2.0 protocols.
