Meta Platforms, owner of Facebook, imposed temporary measures on Wednesday October 18. This is to limit “potentially unwelcome or unwanted comments” on publications related to the escalation in Gaza.

Meta said in an updated blog post that it would change the default settings for those who can comment on new public Facebook posts from users “in the region.” So that they are limited to their friends and followers only. A Meta spokesperson declined to elaborate on how Meta defined the area.

The social media company added that it would remove the ability to see the first comment or two on posts when browsing Facebook.

“Our policies are designed to keep people safe on our apps; while providing a platform for everyone,” Meta said. “We apply these policies equally across the world and there is no truth to the suggestion that we are intentionally silencing people,” argues the American multinational.

Some users who posted about the escalation in Gaza accused Meta earlier this week of removing their content.

Moreover, Vice Worlda news site that focuses on Palestinian human rights, said on social media platform X on October 10 that Instagram had suspended the account of its television correspondent twice.

Other Instagram users reported that their posts and stories about the Palestinian territories were not receiving any views.

Meta said it fixed an issue on Instagram that prevented reposted content from appearing correctly in users’ Stories that disappeared 24 hours after it was posted.

“This issue has affected accounts across the world equally, not just those trying to report what is happening in Israel and Gaza. And it has nothing to do with the subject of the content,” Meta asserted.
