Considering that we are still in the first quarter of the year, we still have different lists that recognize the best and the worst of the gaming industry in 2023. One of the sites best qualified to carry out this type of ranking is Metacritic, the famous website that compiles reviews from specialized critics worldwide. Therefore, the organization has been carrying out its Game Publisher Rankings for 14 years, where it analyzes the scores and other factors of each publisher’s games to build an ordered list from worst to best.

This year’s edition, which is based on the 2023 launches, yields very interesting results. Firstly, one of the important criteria for a publisher to be considered for the list is that they have released five or more different games throughout the year. Thus, the site was left with a list of 46 different distributors, among which are some not so well-known names such as Freedom Games or Maximum Entertainment, while some of the biggest names were left out of the first ten, such as Sony in the position number 13 or Microsoft in number 15.

The top ten on the list has several surprises. At number 10 is Thunderful, whose best game of the year was Wordless with a Metacritic score of 85. At number 9 is one of the greats, Sega, which had a great year of re-releases, with Persona 4 Golden which reached a score of 90. Bethesda comes in at number 8, and its best release was Hi-Fi Rush with a score of 90. At number 7 is Aksys Games, a publisher known for localizing Japanese visual novels, and whose best game was the visual novel Jack Jeanne that had a score of 90. Sixth place belongs to Nintendo, whose best game of the year was, without a doubt, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which reached the high score of 96.

Among the top five, surprisingly, are names that not many may know. At number 5 is Annapurna Interactive, which is increasingly gaining more presence in the indie world and its best game was Cocoon, with a score of 90. In position 4 is the Japanese distributor DANGEN Entertainment, which with only five games in The year was enough to climb the positions, and its best game was The Last Spell with a score of 82. Number 3 belongs to Chorus Worldwide, a distributor of indie games whose game with the highest score was A Space for the Unbound with a 85 In second place is Raw Fury, which had a year of highly rated releases, with Cassette Beasts the best with a score of 83.

The first place, and the one that Metacritic determined with its analysis as the best distributor of the year, is none other than Capcom. Taking the award for the second time since they began being made, the Japanese giant had an excellent year with critically acclaimed titles such as Street Fighter 6 and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. However, Capcom’s highest-rated game of last year was the remake of Resident Evil 4, which with a score of 93 was so well received that it was even nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards. Capcom’s lowest-rated game of 2023 was Exoprimal, which reached a score of 67.

Some of the winners from previous years include Sony in 2023, Microsoft in 2022 and Sega in 2021. Capcom previously won the award in 2019.
