Metavers: Peter Jackson’s special effects studio bought for $1.6 billion

From acquisitions to fundraising, the metaverse industry is getting structured. After the announcements by the giant Facebook, now “Meta”, of its desire to contribute to the advent of a 3D virtual world, baptized the “metaverse”, the entire ecosystem of this future digital industry is unveils. On Wednesday, November 10, director Peter Jackson announced the sale of his special effects studio, Weta Digital, to Unity Software, an American company specializing in engines for developing video games. The purpose of this acquisition, valued at 1.6 billion dollars, is indeed “to develop the future of the metaverse”, according to Unity.

This group listed on Wall Street intends to use the technology of Weta Digital, one of the most renowned studios in the film industry, to shape this virtual universe accessible via the Internet. The multi-Oscar-winning studio is notably at the origin of the visual effects of the films “Avatar”, the “Lord of the Rings” or certain opuses of the Marvel franchises.
