Metro 3 Crisis in Brussels: Palais du Midi Dismantling and Construction Delays

2023-09-13 18:30:00

Last June, the news had the effect of a bomb in the Stalingrad-Lemonnier district where the sky works drag on: the Palais du Midi will have to be temporarily dismantled. Only the walls will remain. A decision with colossal consequences taken because of technical problems preventing the continuation of the work undertaken for the creation of the southern section of the future metro line 3, between Forest and Brussels-North station.

We learn that, this Thursday, the Brussels government, at the request of Secretary of State Ans Persoons (Vooruit), will look into the question and should validate the draft ordinance to accelerate the time-consuming urban planning procedures to come. According to the meeting between ministerial cabinets this Wednesday, the signals are green and no party intends to block the file, a government source informs us. “Because every month that passes is time wasted.”

“Destroying the Palais du Midi is destroying our lives”: the Stalingrad district stunned by the news of the dismantling of the building for metro 3

Once approved by the Vervoort executive, the ordinance should then go to the regional Parliament on September 25, with a view to final adoption on September 29.

This procedure aims to reduce as much as possible the delays for the metro construction site and the demolition-reconstruction of the Palace. If the legislative process goes smoothly, a permit application could be submitted at the beginning of 2024. The demolition itself, however, will not be carried out until the next legislature… and the titanic project will only be completed under the term after that. The date of 2030 was in fact mentioned for the entry into circulation of the southern section of metro 3.

As a reminder, the vast line 3 has been split into two distinct projects, with different time frames. If the work between Forest and Brussels-North Station is underway, the project to extend line 3 to Schaerbeek-Evere is in trouble. Since receiving explosive quotes last spring, this northern section has been in consultation according to some, on standby according to others.
