Metro Line 3: Resumption of Construction and Funding Challenges Revealed

2023-09-27 05:32:00

Stib and Toots, the consortium in charge of construction work on metro line 3, have reached an agreement for the resumption of the site, which has been stopped for a year and a half near the Gare du Midi, we read Wednesday in Le Soir. If all goes well, entry into service on the section between Albert and Gare du Nord will take place in 2030, instead of 2025.

The Stib and this consortium have been in legal conflict for months over possible penalties and the cost of work around the Palais du Midi. The agreement provides that Toots will be responsible for the construction site on this listed building.

Additional cost of 400 million

This announcement comes as the regional parliament must approve on Friday an ordinance which will speed up the procedure for issuing the planning permit for the deconstruction of the Palais du Midi.

A bill of 1.28 billion

The Stib initially aimed to put the southern section of metro line 3 into service in 2025. It is now talking regarding 2030.

In 2022, the bill for this route was expected to amount to 756 million euros. It now climbs to 1.283 billion.
