Thomas Meunier’s first competitive game with his new club was on Thursday (February 9th). In the Turkish Cup the round of 16 was against the second division team Genclerbirligi from Ankara. Meunier sat on the bench and initially had to watch as his new team headed towards embarrassment.

Favorite Trabzonspor surprisingly fell behind early on. Melih Bostan danced his way through the defense, sent several opponents into the muddy grass and slotted in to take the lead. The guests found no answer. Then the ex-Borussia Dortmund player stepped onto the pitch.

In his following 45 debut minutes, the right-back showed ambition. Trabzonspor stepped on the accelerator, which is why Meunier was often found in the opponent’s half. But a hit wasn’t possible. The last minute of the six-minute stoppage time was already running.
After a throw-in, the ex-BVB star got the ball again in the opponent’s penalty area, looked up briefly – and played a precise cross, which Eren Elmali headed in for the much-celebrated equalizer. Extra time was saved and Meunier was immediately the hero.

Instead of a surprise exit, the second division opponent had now been broken. In extra time, Mahmoud Hassan scored the decisive 2-1 – also because Meunier was able to shine at the back by winning the ball.
