Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is having difficulty showing his new movie “Pinocchio” in his country

MEXICO: Director Guillermo del Toro has called for his latest film “Pinocchio” to be shown in Mexican independent cinemas, speaking of the “systematic destruction of Mexican cinema”.

Del Toro revealed, on Twitter, that the “Pimienta Films” production company is “looking for independent cinemas” in three states to show the film, noting that a large distribution company, “Cinemix”, refused to show it.

And specialized magazines suggested that “Cinemix” refrained from distributing the film, because it is shown in theaters exclusively and is only available for two weeks, starting from November 24, before it is available for viewing on the “Netflix” streaming platform.

The movie “Bardo” by another great Mexican director, Alejandro González Iñárritu, is currently being shown in Mexican cinemas, before it was included in the works available on “Netflix”.

Del Toro believed that “a systematic and brutal destruction of Mexican cinema and its institutions, which took years to build.”

The director published the statement issued by the Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Amacc), in which it announced “the postponement of the invitation to the Ariel Awards for the year 2023,” equivalent to the Oscars in the United States, the Cesar Awards in France, or Goya in Spain, due to a “serious financial crisis.”

The Mexican Academy reported that state support “has decreased significantly in recent years”. She explained that “the state, which for a long time was the academy’s engine and supporter, has relinquished its responsibility as a major promoter of cultural works in general and cinema in particular.”

Other cultural sectors have complained that the left-wing nationalist government has cut budgets since it came to power at the end of 2018.

At the same time, the Government emphasized work to encourage the cultural activity of indigenous communities.
