This is a 50-year-old man who was in the Netherlands.

Mexico has confirmed the first case of monkeypox within its borders, as reported this Saturday by Hugo López-Gatell Ramírez, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion of the Latin American country, through his Twitter account.

“Today we confirm the first imported case of monkeypox in Mexico,” reads the text.

“He is a 50-year-old man, a permanent resident of New York City, who probably caught it in the Netherlands. He attends in Mexico City]he adds.

It also indicates that the patient is in preventive isolation, detailing that “fortunately” his condition is stable.

“Hopefully he will recover without complications,” adds the Mexican official, who assures that the contagion efficiency of this disease is low.

Outlook in Latin America

This Thursday Bolivia warned regarding the first suspected case of monkeypox in the country, a 26-year-old man who had direct contact with two people who arrived from Spain and who now shows all the symptoms of the disease.

A day later, the Argentine Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the South American nation, making it the first in all of Latin America. This is a 40-year-old man who returned from Spain on May 16.

At the same time, Ecuador confirmed its first suspected case of the disease. For their part, two countries that have not yet reported any suspicious patients, Peru and the Dominican Republic, declared a health alert, respectively.

This Tuesday the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning once morest hasty decisions when dealing with the outbreak of the disease.

“Let’s not make a mountain out of a grain of sand,” said Sylvie Briand, director at the agency’s Department of Global Infection Hazards Preparedness. In this sense, she assured that the outbreak in question “is not normal”, but it is “controllable”.
