Initially it was said that apart from humans, only the great apes would pass the mirror test. The test is regarding self-perception: a test animal is given a marking that can only be seen in a mirror. If the animal recognizes that the flaw is on its own body, some researchers conclude that it has a certain ability to recognize itself. Of course, this cannot be seen as ego-consciousness in animals, and one cannot derive an understanding of the functional principle of a mirror from it.
