Michael Hutchence and Peter Brock estates left children with zero inheritance

When cultural figures and sports legends pass away, property empires often leave their children without a single cent.

The Disappearance of the Hutchence Property Portfolio

Upon the 1997 death of INXS frontman Michael Hutchence inside a Sydney hotel room, a worldwide real estate collection valued in the tens of millions was left behind, encompassing a Gold Coast waterfront home, French and Bali holiday villas, alongside London commercial holdings. Eight years later, when administrators closed the books on the estate, they asserted that the musician had passed away essentially penniless, reporting merely $506 in currency and a $572 portion of the group’s bank balance.

The properties had been placed inside complex offshore corporate trusts and tax havens. Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily Hutchence received no real estate, no royalties, and zero inheritance. Documentarian Richard Lowenstein spoke to Tiger Lily in 2019, where she recalled a meeting with her late father’s accountant who allegedly handed her an envelope containing £500 ($A1000) and told her, “there you go, that will tide you over.”

Legal Fallout Over Motorsport Estates

When Australian racing icon Peter Brock passed away in 2006, he left behind a vast 28ha property at Eltham in Melbourne along with crucial vehicle and licensing holdings. A bitter Supreme Court battle erupted over his $3.3m estate after Brock left three conflicting wills, including a 1984 document, an unsigned 2006 draft, and a 2003 DIY kit. Because the signed 2003 DIY document contained no division instructions, Brock technically died intestate without a functional will.

Estate Figure Estimated Value at Death Notable Real Estate / Assets Outcome for Children
Michael Hutchence $10m – $20m Global portfolio, French/Bali villas Zero inheritance (trust walls)
Peter Brock $15m+ 28ha Eltham sanctuary, Bathurst Commodores Estate passed to biological children
Aaron Spelling $US600m The Manor (Holmby Hills 123-room mansion) $US800,000 each to Tori and Randy
Tony Curtis $US60m California and Nevada properties Explicitly disinherited by amended will

The Victorian court ruled in 2007 that the 2003 document validly revoked the 1984 will despite lacking proper witness signatures. The estate bypassed Bev Brock, stepson James, and fiancee Julie Bamford, landing solely with biological children Robert and Alexandra. The siblings ultimately agreed to share the estate equally with James, while Ms Bamford settled a family provision claim out of court.

Hollywood Denials and Intentional Disinheritance

Television producer Aaron Spelling built one of the largest private residential holdings in American history, anchored by The Manor—a 123-room mega-mansion in Holmby Hills featuring a bowling alley and ice rink. When Spelling died in 2006, daughter Tori Spelling and her brother Randy received just $US800,000 each, while the rest went to Candy Spelling. Candy Spelling later defended the modest distribution by claiming her daughter lacked financial discipline.

Acquiring an impressive New York property collection that featured a $US4.4m dwelling in Manhattan’s West Village, Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman also set up his affairs distinctively. Court documents at the time of Hoffman’s 2005 [sic: 2014] passing demonstrated that he deliberately omitted his three kids—Cooper, Tallulah, and Willa—from his testament to keep them from growing up as trust-fund beneficiaries, bestowing his entire net worth upon longtime companion Mimi O’Donnell.

In Hollywood, Tony Curtis rewrote his will months before his death in 2010 to explicitly disinherit his five children, including Jamie Lee Curtis. The court document contained a blunt clause: “I acknowledge the existence of my children … and have intentionally and with full knowledge chosen not to provide for them.” The $US60m estate went entirely to his fifth wife, Jill Vandenberg. Kirk Douglas likewise directed almost his entire $US61m fortune to the Douglas Foundation when he died in 2020 at age 103, leaving zero cash or property to his children, including Michael Douglas.
