Michael Jackson’s Iconic ‘Thriller’ Album Will Be the Subject of an Official Documentary

It will be the third non-fiction film dedicated to a King of Pop album after Bad 25 (2012) et Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall (2016), directed by Spike Lee.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the album Thriller by Michael Jackson, the artist’s estate and Sony Music Entertainment will pay tribute to the best-selling record of all time in an official documentary.

Directed by journalist, music historian and filmmaker Nelson George, this film currently in production will trace the creation of this album which broke all records, as specified by Sony Music Entertainment in a statement. For the moment, no release date has been announced.

“This documentary will include never-before-seen footage and interviews and will chronicle the moment Jackson’s career took off to become a megastar and pop culture phenomenon that continues to influence the worlds of music, television, dance, fashion and more to date,” the statement read.

Released in 1982, Thriller is Michael Jackson’s sixth studio album as a solo artist. Sold 100 million copies worldwide, this record won eight Grammy Awards and was the first to be certified triple diamond by the RIAA (equivalent to SNEP in the United States).

For the moment without official title, this documentary on Thriller is the third non-fiction film devoted to an album by Michael Jackson. The previous two, Bad 25 (2012) et Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall (2016) were directed by Spike Lee.

Other successful productions have also been validated by the estate of Michael Jackson such as the film This Is It (2009) by Kenny Ortega, Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE show in Las Vegas and the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical MJ The Musical.
