WORDS FROM HEAD COACH ROGER CHANDLER

“I am very much looking forward to seeing our guys compete as this is a great opportunity for us to take another step forward into the season. It will be the first time that you will see what we expect our starting lineup to look like this season. There is a very talented field of teams that will challenge everyone, and every individual must step up to that challenge.”

HIGH RANKINGS

Three individual Spartans cracked the top-12 in their weight class in the latest InterMat rankings – Senior 165 pounder Caleb Fish enters as the highest-ranked spartan wrestler at No. 9, senior 157 pounder Chase Saldate comes in at No. 11, and sixth year 184 pounder Layne Malczewski rounded out the individually-ranked Spartans at No.12.

PARTICIPATING TEAMS

If you want to be the best, you must beat the best. The Spartans will get an opportunity to do just that as No. 1 Penn State and No. 14 Rutgers will be in attendance on Sunday, giving the Green and White an early look at future Big Ten dual opponents.

MSU will have a chance at three teams it already seen this year, Buffalo, Gardner-Webb, and Brown each were at the Clarion Open to open the 2023-24 season. Buffalo got the best of Michigan State winning seven of 12 matches, the Green and White topped Gardner-Webb winning six out of eight matches, and Brown had the narrow edge winning two out of three matches.

Binghamton, Long Island, and Northern Colorado will also compete in the invite.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Twelve Spartans posted top-six finishes in the freshman/sophomore brackets at the annual Michigan State Open last Saturday. Brecksville, Ohio native’s and freshmen twin brothers’ 184 pounder Luke and 285 pounder Max Vanadia each claimed first in their weight classes, combining for a perfect 7-0 record last weekend.
