Mick Schumacher appointed reserve driver for Mercedes F1 in 2023[F1-Gate.com]

Mick Schumacher has been announced as Mercedes F1’s reserve driver for 2023.

Mick Schumacher fought two seasons with the Haas F1 team, but the team decided to replace Schumacher with Nico Hulkenberg in 2023.

Following the news of Mick Schumacher’s departure from the Haas F1 team, Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff pointed out the connection between the Schumacher family and Mercedes and said frankly “I want to take care of it”.

Mick Schumacher’s father, seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, raced for Mercedes in sports cars and DTMs, spending three years at Mercedes between 2010 and 2012 before retiring from F1. I used to be an F1 driver.

Mick’s uncle Ralf Schumacher and cousin David Schumacher have also raced for Mercedes in various categories.

In Mercedes F1, Nick de Vries, who had been a reserve driver until last year, became AlphaTauri’s F1 driver, and Stoffel Vandoorne became Aston Martin’s reserve driver, leaving the reserve driver role vacant.

Ferrari also decided not to extend the contract of the Ferrari Driver Academy with Mick Schumacher. Schumacher has been in the program since 2019 and was Scuderia Ferrari’s reserve driver for 2022.

Shortly after Ferrari’s announcement, Mercedes F1 announced Mick Schumacher as the team’s reserve driver for 2023.

Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff said: “Mick is a talented young driver and we are delighted to have him join the team. , is hungry to improve.These are all important characteristics and we look forward to having him help develop the W14.”

“I also know that with two years of racing experience in Formula 1, I am ready to jump into the car to replace Lewis or George if the need arises.”

Commenting on his new role at Mercedes F1, Mick Schumacher said: “I am thrilled to join the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team as reserve driver for 2023 and contribute to their performance in this highly competitive and professional environment. I promise to do my best to do so,” he commented.

“I see this as a new start. I am excited and grateful to Toto and everyone involved for their trust in me. Formula 1 is a very fascinating world and I will never stop learning. Never, I want to absorb more knowledge and do everything for the benefit of the Mercedes team.”
