A Mickey Mouse horror film is being made after “Steamboat Willie” fell into the public domain.
Just after midnight on New Year’s Day, the first version of the iconic Disney character – who first appeared in the famous black-and-white animated short “Steamboat Willie” in 1928 – was made available to creators so they can use it in other projects.
A few hours later, the trailer for the new horror film “Mickey’s Mouse Trap” was released.
The film features a killer wearing a mouse mask who attacks middle school students at a local arcade.
The synopsis reads: “It’s Alex’s 21st birthday, but she’s stuck at the arcade for a late shift, so her friends decide to surprise her…But a masked killer, disguised as Mickey Mouse, decides to play a game with them in which she must survive.”
The film was directed, edited and filmed by Jamie Bailey from a screenplay by Simon Phillips.
With Mickey Mouse’s version of “Steamboat Willie” now in the public domain, Disney has clarified that there are still some limitations, with those involved needing to ensure fans don’t risk confusing their projects with a Disney production.
A Disney spokesperson said: “More modern versions of Mickey will not be affected by the expiration of the ‘Steamboat Willie’ copyright, and Mickey will continue to play a leading role as an ambassador world of the Walt Disney Company in our stories, theme park attractions and merchandise. We will, of course, continue to protect our rights to more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright copyright, and we will strive to avoid consumer confusion caused by unauthorized uses of Mickey and our other iconic characters.”
