Microsoft lays off 689 workers in Seattle-area offices

Microsoft is continuing its global job cuts from its workforce. In its latest decision, the company wants to lay off 689 workers at its offices in Redmond, Bellevue and Issaquah.

The details were shared by Washington State Department of Employment Security Monday, who also shared past layoffs made by Microsoft in Seattle. This recent announcement will lead to a total of 2,184 job cuts in the region.

The last layoff apparently covered different departments of the company in said locations, including Visual Studio for Mac, Entertainment & Devices, Azure Edge + Platform, and more. According to another rapportthe software giant confirmed the action due to falling customer demand.

It’s still part of Microsoft’s global job cut plan announced in January, which is expected to affect 10,000 workers through the end of the company’s third quarter of fiscal year 3 set for March 31. Despite this, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella promised to provide benefits to those affected.

“We are committed to ensuring that everyone whose roles are eliminated have our full support during these transitions,” Nadella explained in January, confirming the company’s job cut plan. “Employees eligible for U.S. benefits will receive a variety of benefits, including above-market severance pay, continuous medical coverage for six months, continuous vesting of stock awards for six months, transition and 60 days notice of termination, regardless of whether such notice is legally required.Benefits for employees outside the United States will align with each country’s employment laws.

Looking at past reports of these rounds of layoffs, the job cuts have already affected many Microsoft departments and sites. Some offices and departments that have already suffered include those of Germany, LinkedIn, service commercial de services cloud, GitHubIndustrial Metaverse Core, 343 Industries, Mixed Reality Toolkit, AltSpaceVR, Bethesda Game Studios et la Coalition.
