Microsoft plans to place ads in the “Recommended” area of the Windows 11 Start menu, which the company says will show apps and websites that it believes might interest you. This change is currently being tested, so there may not be many opinions from users regarding its usability.

If the change is approved, users will have the option to deactivate it whenever they want. To do this, go to Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off “Show recommendations for app tips, deals, and more” to disable Start menu ads. This was the way Microsoft announced the “feature”.

We’re now testing recommendations to help you discover great Microsoft Store apps in Recommended in the Start menu. This will only appear for Windows Insiders in the US Beta Channel and will not apply to commercial devices (devices managed by organizations). This can be turned off by going to Settings > Personalization > Start and turning off the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more” toggle.

This is just one of many recent changes designed to promote apps and services on Windows. Some users may find it useful to see recommended apps and websites in the Start menu, and app developers will certainly appreciate the extra opportunity to promote their apps.

What do you think of these new features in Windows?
