Microsoft has decided to end the online services of the store of one of its Xbox consoles after a faithful 18 years of service. You now have little time left to save the games you love before they become inaccessible to download forever.

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox 360 store will be permanently closed on July 29, 2024. Despite this closure, it will still be possible to purchase and play games from this console on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, thanks to backwards compatibility, while access to non-backwards compatible games will require a physical version. However, if you have previously downloaded games, you will still be able to use them offline on the Xbox 360. As for online games, their availability will depend on the developers’ decision to keep their game servers active. All this is just a reminder, since the announcement dates from last year.

Currently, only 29% of Xbox 360 games benefit from backward compatibility, meaning that 71% of these titles, or exactly 633 games out of a total of 2154, will no longer be available for purchase in digital version. These data are rather frightening regarding the conservation of the video game world, especially after their latest position regarding the conservation of this universe! Sarah Bond, the project manager, communicated this during the Xbox Podcast:

An ambitious project that contrasts with what the company announced to us last year. Indeed, if we combine the fact that a third of Xbox 360 games benefit from backward compatibility with the fact that the online store for this same console will close this summer, the idea of this project could be seen as a bad joke.
Microsoft also informed that it does not plan to expand this list of backward compatible games due to legal, technical and copyright limitations. For those determined to hold on to their favorite titles, this means that you only have a few months left to acquire these games in digital format before they disappear from the platform.
