Microsoft has confirmed that the ‘suites’ of office applications Microsoft 365 and Office 365 for business customers will no longer include the Teams productivity solution in Europe, which will offer new plans at a lower price and Teams independently.
The European Commission announced in July the start of a formal investigation to determine whether Microsoft violated competition rules in the region by linking its Teams application for video conferencing and productivity with the installation of the Office software, a situation denounced by its competitor Slack. denounced in July 2020 before Brussels.
Then, Microsoft assured that it was going to work with the Commission to find a solution to the concerns that had motivated the investigation, and this Thursday it announced “proactive changes” that will affect Microsoft 365 and Office 365 for companies, in the European Economic Area and Swiss.
As of October 1 of this year, Microsoft will unlink Teams from the two office suites, and will offer this solution independently at a price of 5 euros per month or 60 euros per year. The two ‘suites’ will have a lower price.
The company qualifies in its official blog that current business customers may choose to maintain their subscription with Teams or switch to the new ‘suite’ without Teams. Instead, for small businesses and frontline workers, Microsoft will continue to offer Microsoft 365 and Office 365 with Teams, but also another offering without Teams, at a lower price.
Likewise, interoperability between Microsoft 365 and Office 365 applications and services will grow, so that companies such as Zoom or Salesforce can adapt their services. Developers will also be supported with new resources.
Added to these measures is support for new mechanisms to allow third-party solutions to host Office web apps, similar to what Microsoft already does in Teams.
