Microsoft tried a very similar approach with their Gamepass subscription service. Over the years, well-known development studios were bought for many millions and promised to fill in one blockbuster following the other in the subscription service. “Xbox is back” was the motto back then, following the botched Xbox One era. After around two and a half years, however, the balance sheet is manageable and also has to be worked up briefly due to the current “Redfall” debacle.
