Midfielder Salih Özcan’s Fire Scare: Updates on Borussia Dortmund Player’s Near Miss

In terms of sport, midfielder Salih Özcan has recently been looking up at Borussia Dortmund. In private, the BVB professional now apparently has to survive a real moment of shock.

As “Bild” reports, a fire broke out on the balcony of Özcan’s penthouse apartment on Dortmund’s Phoenixsee on Monday morning.

It is said that a cable fire caused by a short circuit ignited furniture. The fire department was on duty for over an hour and a half.

The emergency services could have prevented the flames from spreading to the apartment itself. However, parts of the facade were removed to rule out possible embers, writes the tabloid.

Özcan was not there, but will only return from his international trip with the Turkish national team later on Monday. The 25-year-old was therefore informed about the fire by the fire department’s operations manager.

The BVB player is not said to have suffered any major damage in the fire.

More playing time at BVB for Salih Özcan

For Özcan, the unpleasant event comes right in the middle of a phase that is actually going well for him. After months of being a reserve, the former Cologne player was recently increasingly part of the regular staff again under BVB coach Edin Terzic.

Özcan was in the starting line-up against VfL Wolfsburg (1-0) and against TSG Hoffenheim (3-1) in the Bundesliga, as well as in the Champions League game against AC Milan (0-0). In the 4-2 win against Union Berlin before the international break, he at least made a brief appearance as a substitute.

He was also part of the starting line-up twice in the Turkish national team. In the 1-0 win in the European Championship qualifiers in Croatia, Özcan played through and prepared Baris Yilmaz’s winning goal with a pass worth seeing.

In the 4-0 win against Latvia, with which new Italian coach Vincenzo Montella’s team secured their European Championship ticket, Özcan was substituted in the 69th minute.
