Mikati Calls for Immediate Diplomatic Gathering After Israeli Attack on Firefighters

Beirut – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on Saturday evening the ambassadors of Western countries and representatives of international organizations in his country to an emergency meeting on Monday, following Israel‘s targeting of civil defense firefighters in the south of the country.

Earlier on Saturday, three firefighters were killed and two others were injured when an Israeli drone struck a civil defense fire truck in southern Lebanon.

In a statement received by Anadolu Agency, Mikati condemned “the new Israeli aggression that targeted civil defense personnel while they were performing their duty in extinguishing fires resulting from the raids carried out by the Israeli enemy on the southern town of Frun.”

He considered that “this new aggression against Lebanon constitutes a flagrant violation of international laws, and represents a blatant aggression against human values. This is not strange for the Israeli enemy, and we are witnessing its successive crimes in Lebanese regions and in the Palestinian territories as well.”

He added: “Based on the principle that the Israeli enemy does not care about international laws and norms, I have invited the ambassadors of Western countries and representatives of international organizations to an emergency meeting at the government palace on Monday.”

He explained that the goal of the meeting was to “put everyone before their responsibilities in stopping the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon, and to put pressure on the Israeli enemy that does not care about any law, and continues to ignite the fire of its crimes against Lebanon and the Lebanese, and especially against those who work to extinguish the fires of its hatred.”

Since October 8, 2023, Lebanese and Palestinian factions in Lebanon, most notably Hezbollah, have been exchanging daily shelling with the Israeli army across the “Blue Line” border separating the two sides, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries, most of them on the Lebanese side.

The factions are demanding an end to the war waged by Israel with American support on Gaza since October 7, which has left more than 135,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.
