Mike McCarthy to Continue as Head Coach of Dallas Cowboys Despite Playoff Exit: Owner Jerry Jones Maintains Status Quo

While many expected his dismissal, Mike McCarthy will return as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2024 despite the rapid elimination of his team.

The Cowboys were upset by the Green Bay Packers in the first round of the playoffs last Sunday after finishing the regular season with an impressive 12-5 record for the third year in a row.

McCarthy, who has one year remaining on his contract, will therefore resume his position in Dallas for a fifth season within a group which has decided to maintain the status quo, under the leadership of owner Jerry Jones, who had nevertheless qualified this exclusion of “one of my biggest surprises since I got involved in the sport”.

The Cowboys were the clear favorites on Sunday, but they dug themselves a 27-0 hole in the second quarter.

Over the Cowboys’ last four playoff games, McCarthy is 1-3. He has a cumulative record of 42-25 in the regular season, with two division titles in the NFC East.

He is the sixth straight Cowboys coach to fail to lead his team beyond the divisional round since Barry Switzer in 1995.
