In an interview for British Vogue’s 2023 issue published on Thursday (18 May 23), the Flowers singer referenced some of her most controversial performances, such as when she twerked Robin Thicke’s pelvis on stage at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Reflecting on the reactions, however, the musician wondered if she deserved to be so “harshly judged.”

“I felt guilty and ashamed for years because of the controversy and anger I caused,” she said. Now that I’m an adult, I realize how harshly I was judged. I was judged harshly by adults as a child and now, as an adult, I realize that I would never judge a child harshly.
