Social media users circulated a picture of a woman taking off her shirt in the stands, saying that she was an Ecuadorean fan celebrating during a match for her country’s national team in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The post includes three shots of a female fan on the stands of what appears to be a soccer field as she is about to take off her shirt. The accompanying commentary read, “The shot of the Ecuadorian cheerleader that everyone is looking for in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.”
However, the image actually belongs to a female fan during a match in Mexico a month before the start of the World Cup, and has nothing to do with the current Qatar World Cup.
The image has received dozens of posts from several Facebook pages since it began spreading on November 25, 2022, after the Netherlands and Ecuador national teams tied 1-1 at Khalifa Stadium in the second round of Group A of the World Cup.
A search for the image indicated that it was published on several Mexican sites in October 2022.
It was taken from a video showing a Mexican fan taking off her shirt to celebrate the winning goal for Tigres over Pachuca in the Mexican Football League.
The elements shown in the video correspond to the University Stadium, where the match was played on October 14.
