118 days after a strike began at Minera Peñasquito, and after accumulating losses of more than 436 million dollars, this Thursday the National Union of Mining, Metallurgical, Steel and Similar Workers of the Mexican Republic reached an agreement with Newmont, owner of the mining company located in Zacatecas.

“As a result of the negotiations carried out in the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), between the representation of the National Mining Union and Mark Rodgers, regional director in South America of Newmont Corporation, the more than two thousand fellow workers of Minera Peñasquito “They decided to make a unanimous agreement to return to work,” said the Mining Union.

In a statement, the organization led by Morena senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia detailed that the terms under which the strike is lifted include a salary increase of 8 percent per worker and per working day, with retroactive payment from August 1 to the date.

In addition, a payment equivalent to 152 million pesos distributed equally to each worker is included.

“In relation to the payment of profits for fiscal year 2022, the SAT resolution will be awaited with the support of the STPS to carry out the corresponding procedures. While with the payment of profits for fiscal year 2023 it will be 10 percent in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement,” added Section 304 of the Mining Union.

Meanwhile, the STPS recalled that it was on May 12 of this year when the Mining Union presented a strike procedure to the Federal Labor Court for Collective Affairs for compliance with the Collective Labor Contract.

“To resolve the conflict, conciliatory talks were held at the Federal Center for Conciliation and Labor Registration (CFCRL) and at the Federal Labor Court itself,” the federal agency detailed.

At that time, an agreement was not reached and the suspension of work was declared on June 7, 2023. The talks continued with the STPS as a mediator, which allowed a rapprochement that ended the strike, with the agreement signed last October 3.

So far, only the STPS and the National Mining Union have presented a position on the facts, while Newmont, owner of Minera Peñasquito, has not commented on the matter.
