Mining: DRC signs mining contract with GEC

Kalemie, March 15, 2024 – The Head of State, Félix Tshisekedi chaired the mining contract signing ceremony with the Chinese Enterprise Group (GEC) on Thursday March 14.

This is a 5th amendment to the collaboration agreement concluded in April 2008 for the development of the mining sector with a view to the execution of an infrastructure project in the DRC.

This agreement provides, among other things, for an upward revision (from 3.2 to 7 billion dollars) of the amount of investment for the construction of more or less 5,000 km of roads in the DRC.

Also, the participation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the capital of Sino-Congolaise Hydroelectric (SICOHYDRO) of Busanga (60% for the GEC and 40% for the DRC) and the distribution of shares of Sino-Congolaise of Mines (SICOMINES), 68% against 32%, until the total repayment of loans linked to the Sino-Congolese cooperation project.

All this, we learned, will allow the Générale des Carrières et des Mines (GECAMINES), which will be responsible for selling the equivalent of 32% of this production, to market part of the SICOMINES production from of this year.

Several members of the government took part in this ceremony, in particular, the ministers of Infrastructure, Mines, Budget and Finance.
