Minister Cordero says that demolition of ‘narco-houses’: “It has been legally ingenious”

After the demolition of a third “narco-house”, Justice Minister Luis Cordero maintained that Mayor Rodolfo Carter’s plan has been “legally ingenious.”

The Minister of Justice, Louis Cordero, maintained that “the mayor’s strategy (Rodolfo) Carter has been legally ingenious”regarding the three “narco-houses” demolished in the commune of Florida by the municipality.

Cordero’s statements come following Carter announced that a third “narco-house” was demolished in the commune, as part of a municipal initiative that began in 2023, and consists of planning to dismantle 16 homes.

Before Meganoticias, the Secretary of State argued that “the strategy of the mayor (Rodolfo) Carter has been legally ingenious, I think, because the Ministry of Justice has no competence in this type of thing, therefore, and here I am going to advance an opinion From the point of view as a Law professor, what the mayor is probably using are powers granted to him by the general law on urban planning and construction to demolish buildings that are not regularized or that do not have a building permit”.

“That is probably what usually happens with unauthorized extensions, or construction with unauthorized buildings. And that, in fact, in urban matters, it is one of the areas where the State has the strongest powers, and one of them is demolition”.

“They found an ingenious way to address this issue,” Cordero added.

In this regard, however, he qualified that it is necessary to take into account “the public effects that initiatives of these characteristics can have, in terms of being completely certain that you are doing this demolition with respect to what you describe as ‘narco-house “”.

“Sometimes errors in this type of thing, beyond the powers that the authority is exercising, can have some negative effect,” he said. “It is a message for organized crime, it is a risk that Mayor Carter takes as well, because he is exposed on the front lines. It seems to me that he has a well-defined strategy on this point and I think that the important thing in this is to articulate with the justice system ”.
