When Robert Habeck returned from a private trip in early January, angry people blocked his ferry. The minister had been warned about the unrest – by his political competitors, of all people. The Green politician is concerned about the “brutalized” social climate.

Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck spoke in detail for the first time about the blockade at the ferry pier in Schlüttsiel, Schleswig-Holstein. “I knew that there would be protests. I received information around midday,” said Habeck in an interview with “Stern”. The warning about the impending unrest came from, of all people, a Christian Democrat. “A CDU colleague from local politics had tipped off Green MPs that something was brewing at the investor. That was very thoughtful of her – and a sign of how fair politics can be.”

When the blockade occurred the week before last, the Green politician was returning from a private visit to the Hallig Hooge. The Economics Minister said he decided against an offer from the BKA to take a detour and deliberately took the ferry to talk to the demonstrating farmers. He was sure that there were many farmers among the demonstrators who wanted to talk. “But they didn’t get through, the mood at the investor was angry.” The Green continued: “I am pleased that farmer representatives have now accepted my invitation so that we can still talk in peace.”

In the interview with “Stern” Habeck also warned of possible assassination attempts against politicians. “Wolfgang Schäuble has just died. He suffered for a large part of his life from the consequences of the terrible assassination attempt. Oskar Lafontaine was attacked – there were always assassins. And plans have been uncovered recently – and fortunately they have been thwarted so far.”

Habeck considers symbolic gallows, which are increasingly seen in the wake of the farmers’ protests, to be a warning signal: “I find that really disturbing. If words are precursors to actions, then what are such symbols?” Habeck described the social climate as “brutalised”. Asked whether he was personally afraid of an assassination attempt, the Vice Chancellor replied: “I have a professional apparatus around me that should enable me not to think about it.” And further: “As Vice Chancellor, I have personal protection. Many others do not have this protection. We, as a society, have to defend ourselves against a climate of threat.”
