Ministry Confirms No Planned Increase in Bread Prices – Ensuring Consumer Affordability

Dakar, Oct 17 (APS) – No increase in the price of bread has yet been considered by the government, because no request has been filed with the relevant state services for a reevaluation of the price of the said bread. commodity, declares the Ministry of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and SMEs.

”During a press conference, bakers’ unions reported a possible increase in the price of bread. Faced with this declaration, the Ministry of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and SMEs informs the public that no increase in the price of bread is envisaged by the government,” maintains this ministerial department in a press release received Tuesday by APS .

”As a reminder, the price of bread is subject to approval and its revision follows a specific procedure, which is triggered by referral to the internal trade department by those wishing to change the price,” argues the Ministry.

It specifies that in such a case, the referral must be ”accompanied by supporting documents” relating to the requested tariff revision.

”To date, no price review request has been filed for a possible reevaluation of the price of bread,” maintains the ministry.

”Moreover, he argues, it should be noted that the government […] dedicated 60 billion CFA francs to stabilizing the price of the reference baguette at 175 francs instead of a projected price of 325 CFA francs, in 2022 and 2023.
