Former leader Song Young-gil has been confirmed as a candidate for Seoul mayor in the June 1 local elections of the Democratic Party of Korea. Former CEO Song will face off against Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who had already confirmed the nomination for the People’s Power.
On the 29th, Lee Hak-young, chairman of the National Election Commission of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “As a result of a public opinion poll, Song was selected as the candidate.” The Democratic Party did not disclose the percentage of votes received by each candidate in the Seoul mayoral contest in which former Representative Song and former Rep. Kim Jin-ae participated.
At first, Song was even excluded from the nomination by the party leadership and the Strategic Nomination Management Committee, but after controversy, he participated in the primary and eventually won. After winning the primary, he said, “Please, the people and citizens of Seoul, please protect me so that the one-way monopoly of the Yun Seok-yeol administration can be prevented.”
However, within the Democratic Party, there is also a reaction that “former representative Song was chosen as the candidate with only a severe internal wound going round and round.” Rep. Han Jung-jin said, “The party leadership has only provoked all kinds of conflicts without finding a new candidate. Inside and outside the party, the rumors of running for Incheon Gyeyang, an executive advisor of Lee Jae-myung, are constantly being discussed.
In the runoff for the Democratic Party’s Jeonbuk provincial governor candidate held on the same day, former lawmaker Kim Kwan-young defeated re-elected lawmaker Ahn Ho-young and won the final. In the intra-party primary, former lawmaker Kim Yun-deok and Ahn successively defeated re-elected lawmakers Kim Yun-deok and Ahn to secure the seat of the Jeonbuk-do governor.
