The Minnesota Vikings gave it their all with a 14-point surge late in the game, but the Eagles escaped with a 34-28 victory Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
The Eagles sign a second victory in as many games while the Vikings start their season with no victory in two games.
Despite a lackluster first half offensively, Philadelphia managed to break away with 21 points in the last two quarters. The local defense managed to recover four loose balls from Minnesota, including three before halftime. Notably, Justin Jefferson missed a 30-yard catch in the end zone and out of bounds for a touchback as Minnesota led 10-7 in the second quarter. The Vikings also dropped three balls in the first half during their first game of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Known for their success in the ground game last season, the Eagles found the recipe again Thursday evening. Running back D’Andre Swift wowed with 175 rushing yards and a touchdown in his debut in front of his new fans.
Jalen Hurts completed a touchdown pass, in addition to scoring two majors by running. He had 193 passing yards. In total, the Eagles offense recorded 259 yards on the ground during the game with nearly 40 minutes of time of possession (39:28).
DeVonta Smith was the target of choice for Hurts. The star receiver scored a touchdown and had 131 of the Eagles’ 193 passing yards. He accomplished it all in four receptions.
Philadelphia kicker Jake Elliott also shined in the victory with a successful 61-yard field goal. He ties his personal mark, which is a franchise record for the Eagles.
On the other hand, Kirk Cousins tried everything in defeat. The quarterback recorded 364 passing yards, while throwing four touchdown passes, including two to tight end TJ Hockenson.
Jefferson had 159 yards on 11 receptions. With this harvest, Jefferson became only the second receiver in NFL history to surpass the 5,000-yard mark before turning 25. The other player to have also achieved this feat is Randy Moss.
