A new increase in Covid-19 cases has been recorded in recent weeks nationwide. This was confirmed this Wednesday by the Minister of Health, Ximena Aguilera, who called for completing the vaccination schedule in the face of the possible arrival and circulation of this new variant.
“There has been an increase in the circulation of Covid-19. When we left the emergency situation, we announced that we were going to continue living with the virus, that the virus has not disappeared, and that every time the winter season begins in the northern hemisphere, new variants will appear,” said the secretary. of State.
According to the Ministry of Health, 491 new cases are confirmed daily. In that sense, the authority explained that the increase in viral circulation in Chile responds to the fact that “90% of the population lives in the northern hemisphere and that is where the virus is most likely to circulate. And every time a new variant emerges there is the possibility of an increase in cases.”
However, the minister was emphatic in pointing out that this increase in infections has not led to the saturation of the country’s healthcare network.
“As we are no longer a population totally virgin to the virus, and we have all had either vaccines or infections, the body’s response is milder and we do not see the healthcare pressure that we saw when the virus first emerged (…) At this moment, there is no “no greater pressure on the healthcare network,” he said.
Despite this, he warned that “we have to prepare in the summer to have a good winter and we as the Ministry of Health are going to make different announcements related to this in the coming weeks and we have to prepare by getting vaccinated against Covid-19 if we are part of risk groups.”
