The MIR Asturias Intensive Course, which has become a “specific high-performance center” for those who aspire to obtain a position as a resident internal doctor in public health, will prepare this year in Oviedo 1,200 graduates in Medicine, more than 80% coming from outside the region. Another 1,000 will follow it online from the headquarters in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia. Yesterday, all of them were welcomed to “this difficult path that will mark your future”, with a great ceremony at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos.

The academy, created 35 years ago at the initiative of Jaime Baladrón, was acquired in December 2021 by the company Guadarrama Proyectos Educativos, which is behind the CVC investment group and also owns the Alfonso X el Sabio University. This will be the first academic year without Baladrón, who is retiring after two years of transition in which Alberto García Herrero has been taking the reins of the prestigious Oviedo center. The new director paid tribute to him yesterday and was even moved to remember the work carried out by the promoter of “this benchmark” of health training.

Ana Outeiriño, Sara Acuña, Beatriz Moreira, Lara Parado and Sofía Veiga are part of the “pilgrimage” that has turned Oviedo into the Spanish capital of MIR preparation. All five are from Galicia and studied Medicine in Santiago de Compostela. And the five have decided to settle in Asturias to attend this intensive course in person, from which the numbers 1 of the last two editions of the MIR exam have come out. It is estimated that 12% of the graduates who pass the test are prepared in Asturias.

“Our methodology is unique and polished like a diamond,” says García Herrero to explain these successful results. In fact, if Ana Outeiriño has opted to move to the Principality to prepare for the MIR exam, it is precisely “how well they have spoken to me about this academy” and “their good results from it”. Beatriz, Lara and Sofía, for their part, emphasize that “the method they use is very famous and everything is very well organized.” To which Sara adds that, “in addition, it is close to Galicia.”

In the last call of the Ministry of Health, fifty students of the Intensive Course were among the hundred best MIR in Spain, with all that this entails in the choice of specialty. “We are going to provide you with the best tools, but the sacrifice and effort is yours,” warned Alberto García Herrero. He put it another way: “We give you the Ferrari, but you are the drivers.”
