In the United States, a baby was saved from a malformation of a cerebral vein by being operated on directly in his mother’s womb. A scientific revolution that ended in an almost miraculous conclusion as the chances of success seemed so low.
It is a feat in the world of science. Of the surgeons Americans from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital have just successfully operated on the brain of a baby in the womb of its mother, who is 34 weeks pregnant. The child suffered from an aneurysmal malformation of the Vein of Galen (AVVM). This disease is a rare prenatal vascular malformation, according to our colleagues at Science and Future. It affects one in 60,000 babies at birth and causes blood circulation problems, with serious risks of aneurysm. Such blood pressure on the brain, heart and lungs of such a young infant most often leads to death.
This is why an American couple agreed to serve as guinea pigs for the experience of this team of experienced surgeons, determined to save their baby at all costs. “We issued theassumption that an intervention on the fetus, before acute postnatal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular stress ensues, could reduce mortality and morbidity”, explained the researchers to them, before transcribing it in the review Stroke. Concretely, the operation consisted in introducing a needle into the skull of the fetus, under ultrasound guidance to deploy microcoils in the malformed varicose vein and thus reduce the blood flow in the area. A very high-risk manipulation, which nevertheless worked.
