In wintry conditions are in Germany many motorists start to skid. In Bayern three people were injured in traffic accidents near Straubing on Saturday night. According to a police spokesman, the reason for this was the weather: “It’s slippery here, sometimes the trucks are stuck.”

Also in Bavaria, a truck slid off Autobahn 9 into a ditch. The driver was not injured.

Accidents also in East Germany

In Saxony, four people were killed in one accident injured on the A72. When changing to the left lane, a trailer truck collided with the loaded transport trailer of a car on Friday afternoon, the police said. The collision threw the car and trailer across the right-hand lane, causing the trailer to tear off and crashing into the rear of the car. After the collision, the truck crashed into the middle barrier of the freeway and rammed three other vehicles.

In a head-on collision not far away, three people were injured – two of them seriously. A 24-year-old had got into the oncoming lane in Hartenstein-Thierfeld (Zwickau district) with his car due to slippery roads, the police said.

DWD warns: It will remain smooth

The German Weather Service warns of further heavy snowfalls in the Alps on Saturday, which will last until Sunday morning. The amount of snow increases towards the east – up to 60 centimeters are possible in traffic jams. Motorists would still have to reckon with slippery roads and freezing wet conditions.

Otherwise, the snow line will rise to 800 meters in the west and 600 meters in the south-east today. A few centimeters of fresh snow are still possible. There is a risk of ice due to slush. (dpa/mgb)
