Misconduct Allegations Against Montreal Psychologist: Immediate Deregistration Requested

2024-02-02 23:32:16

A Montreal psychologist is the subject of a rare request for immediate deregistration by his professional order, which fears for the safety of the public if he continues his practice.

The Order of Psychologists of Quebec (OPQ) accuses Gilles Michel Ouimet of having had sexual relations with a patient, of having interfered in her personal affairs and of having conducted psychotherapy sessions at night , which can in some cases last for seven consecutive hours.

The psychologist also teaches a course at Polytechnique Montréal on cybercriminal personality analysis.

In addition to a provisional radiation, the Order is calling for a limitation of its practice to exclude women.

“Persistent obstruction”

“We are very worried,” said Me Sabrina Lacroix, who represents the Order’s deputy union member. She also deplored the “persistent obstruction” of Mr. Ouimet before the Disciplinary Council on Friday.

He even attempted to contact the patient, even though the assistant union member, Éveline Marcil-Denault, had “specifically told him not to do so.”

She claimed to have received no documents from the psychologist, despite her repeated requests. The files and notes would allow him to know the nature of the services provided to the patient, their duration and the psychological state of the latter.

She, whose identity is protected, began consulting the psychologist in 2019. The psychotherapy sessions, which took place until November 2022, often took place in the middle of the night and until the early morning.

The psychologist also allegedly involved her in certain professional activities, in addition to receiving personal mail from his patient’s spouse at her home, for example.

Several sexual relations would have taken place in 2023. The assistant union member read before the Council exchanges of emails of an explicit nature between Mr. Ouimet and the patient, where he talks about their antics and notably compares her hip movements to “languorous” waves.

The alleged actions are serious and serious, argued Me Lacroix, not ruling out the possibility that the psychologist might find himself in the same situation again.

“Nothing concrete”

For his part, Me Robert Brunet defended his client, who was not present at the hearing, saying that the Order had nothing concrete to reproach him for.

“These are suspicions, fears […] just hearsay,” he denounced. He highlighted his 40-year career, with no prior record. He ultimately told the Council that his client intended to resign.

The Disciplinary Council must take the case under advisement, once the parties have decided on his desire to leave the profession.
