[Newtalk新聞] Moscow blamed Kiev for firing two S-200 missiles toward Russia’s southern border on Tuesday, damaging homes and injuring 20 people from scattered debris. At the same time, Russia and Ukraine also engaged in fierce fighting in the central city of Nepro, and the two sides even competed for an important village in the southeast. Ukraine claimed on the 28th that it had regained the village in its counterattack.
Russia’s defense ministry said Russian air defenses had successfully intercepted a Ukrainian missile over the southern Russian city of Taganrog, but fragments from the blast wounded a dozen civilians. Shortly after, Russia said it shot down a second S-200 missile near the Azov region.
Local officials reported that 20 people were injured in the attack and determined that an art museum was damaged and debris fell on the city, saying “the missile was part of a terrorist attack in Ukraine”.
Since Moscow launched a military operation in February 2022, Ukrainian border areas have seen frequent drone strikes and shelling, but have almost never been the target of missile strikes. Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, blamed the explosion on Russian air defense systems.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian and Russian forces are battling over a key village in southeastern Ukraine, which Moscow’s army rammed artillery into a fierce counteroffensive in Kiev that Ukraine claimed on Monday to retake. Russian military bloggers say capturing the important village will provide Ukraine with a platform to penetrate further into Russian territory.
