Mississippi State Softball Struggles in Super Regional Game 2, Falls to Oklahoma 7-1

The Mississippi State Bulldogs’ hopes for a national championship run took a significant hit on May 23 as they fell to Oklahoma in Game 2 of their super regional series, 7-1, in a matchup that highlighted the Sooners’ dominance on the mound and in the field. The loss, which came in front of a packed crowd at the Starkville Regional Sports Complex, kept the Bulldogs in a tight series but left them needing to regroup quickly for a potential Game 3.

The game, which saw Oklahoma capitalize on key defensive plays and timely hitting, underscored the challenges facing the No. 4-seeded Bulldogs as they attempt to advance to the Women’s College World Series. Mississippi State, the No. 13 seed, managed just one run on a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Sooners’ offense, led by a three-run rally in the fifth, proved too much to overcome. The loss marked a pivotal moment in the series, as Oklahoma now holds a 2-1 edge heading into the final showdown.

Oklahoma’s Offensive Surge Powering the Series Lead

Oklahoma’s victory was anchored by a combination of strong pitching and clutch hitting. The Sooners’ starter, left-hander Morgan Smith, held Mississippi State to one run over six innings, striking out six batters while limiting the Bulldogs to just four hits. The Sooners’ offense, meanwhile, erupted for seven runs, with three of those coming in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk.

“We knew this was going to be a tough series,” said Oklahoma head coach Joel McCarthy after the game. “Mississippi State is a great team, but we stayed focused on our game plan and executed when it mattered most.”

The Bulldogs’ lone run came in the fourth inning when sophomore outfielder Taylor Smith launched a solo home run to left-center field, cutting Oklahoma’s lead to 4-1. However, the Sooners quickly answered with three runs in the fifth, including a two-run double by center fielder Emily Smith, to extend their lead to 7-1.
