Mitsotakis for Tempi: Let’s let the Justice do its job – 2024-03-23 04:13:34

The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, expressed his confidence in the Greek Justice which is investigating the case of the Tempe tragedy, at the Press Conference after the end of the European Union Summit in Brussels.

In particular, in response to a related question, the prime minister clarified that just the fact that there is an intense political confrontation around the issue of Tempe is not a good development. “Under no circumstances should a national tragedy of this magnitude be politicized or – to be more precise – partisan,” he noted.

Speaking specifically about New Democracy, Mr. Mitsotakis reminded that “in other great national tragedies, we never followed this route. And I wonder what those who talk about a cover-up are referring to?” Continuing, he noted that the Judiciary is doing its work at a much faster speed than what happened in the past, and I believe that this is something that cannot be disputed in any way. “It is enough to see that there are a large number of defendants in this case and the trial of the case seems to be moving at a very fast pace,” he stressed.

At the same time, Mr. Mitsotakis continued by saying that “I would therefore advise everyone not to make political speculation on the issue of Tempi. Let’s let justice do its job unhindered. Eventually she will take responsibility. There are no a priori guilty, there are no a priori innocent in this case.”

As he said afterwards, “the continuous effort to obtain a temporary party benefit from the tragedy of Tempe, in addition to the fact that, in my opinion, is not right, I believe that in the end it will not be party beneficial for those who seek it either. From the first moment I bowed and we bowed our heads with respect, mainly in memory of the dead and in the face of the justified pain of the relatives, we said two things: let the truth shine and only justice can finally deliver the truth.”

In closing, the prime minister noted that “I don’t think anyone expected from an inquiry in the Parliament, if you look at the climate that prevailed in the parliamentary debate, that we will really be able to find a solution. And of course our job, the Government’s job is to ensure that something like this never happens again. That our trains will be truly modern and safe. And we have done work in this direction. In the coming weeks, expect some even more specific announcements and an account of all the interventions we have made recently, – working silently and methodically – on how our trains will be absolutely safe.”
